It is preferable for the support staff to be based at the server farm and essential that they are well trained in server management – it is a good idea to telephone the customer support line of any potential webhost to get a feel for their level of knowledge – you can also ask them about their company infrastructure.

A good host will have connection redundancy i.e. more than one connection. You should check this out when you speak to their customer support.

The important point to note that is a long as you have good customer support, a fast connection and a reliable webhost you can’t go too far wrong.

It pays to do your research online before you sign up with a webhosting company…

It’s not just a choice of free versus paid-for, it’s a matter of finding the best deal.

If you’re serious about making money online, then you really should consider keeping down your overheads. And while it will probably make sense to go down the paid-for route – hence avoiding ads and allowing you complete freedom of url – you don’t need to pay “the going rate”.

What savvy internet surfers know is that, if you are prepared to put in some time on sites like Google, you can get the best deal.

Many webhosting companies offer coupons giving discounts on hosting. Some are permanently discounted, but most just run promotions for a limited time.

If you do an internet search for a term like “webhosting coupons” or “webhosting discounts”, you will be able to see which companies have the best offers at any given time.

Many companies have partnered with Google or Yahoo are able to offer free $50 or $25 AdWords coupons and YPN coupons, which you can either redeem yourself or sell for a significant amount.

If you are a developer, you may also want to look at shopping carts, mailing lists and a free domain to start with.

One thrifty form of web hosting is the shared domain, where the provider partitions a server into sections and companies have their own little piece of the server with a unique name, but really part of one domain. These tend to be the least expensive, and cost is one of the primary advantages of web hosting, and as such a boon to small, cash-poor companies and new start ups.

The disadvantage is that you have no control over who is sharing that space with you. If one of the other users is a crook running a scam, or an unethical marketer spewing e-mail spam to unhappy victims, the whole domain may be blacklisted or blocked by others.

Link building remains remains a core component of effective Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). But let’s face it, as a small business owner you have a business to run and don’t have a lot of time to devote to this link building caper. You’ve made a new post on your blog, or added a new page to your website, and you now need get your content noticed and establish some quick & easy backlinks.

Here is a list of resources I routinely use to kick off a link building campaign. Of course nothing beats an in-content, high PageRank, anchor-text link from a trusted authorty site. But, depending on the level of competition in the space you are targeting, these links can often give your page a lift and form the basis of your on-going efforts.

Wherever possible I try to use resources which are “dofollow” i.e. they do not use the dreaded nofollow tag which basically tells the search engines not to place value on the link. However I am a firm believer in creating a natural and balanced link profile and so have no problem with including some nofllow links. If your content is good, a nofollow link can often lead to good quality followed link being created because a human being…as apposed to a search engine…discovered and cited your content.

Lifestream Sites
Lifestream sites create links from various social network sources and RSS feeds. Once set up they will create links automatically e.g. when you bookmark a page on Delicious it will be added to your lifestream.

Link Posting
Requires more effort than social bookmarking but can create content-rich pages with multiple, in-content deep links.

Blog Directories
Submit blogs & RSS feeds. Add social media accounts where possible e.g. delicious for autmatic link creation.
